Modernizing Carrasco Airport

Carrasco International Airport is advancing with the works for the installation of a new Instrument Landing System (ILS Category IIIb) on its main runway.
This cutting-edge technology will allow aircraft to operate under maximum safety conditions even in adverse weather, such as fog and low visibility.
This high-impact project for the country will continue to improve national airport infrastructure, raising safety, operational, and service standards for aviation, and boosting Uruguay’s connectivity.
Carrasco Airport has set up a dedicated phone line for inquiries about the ILS project: +598 98 050 541 and the email ilscarrasco@aeropuertosuruguay.com.uy, available 24/7. Our team is available to answer any questions or concerns.
What is an ILS?

The ILS, or Instrument Landing System, is an electronic aid that guides aircraft for safe alignment and descent toward the runway, even with minimal visibility.
The Category IIIb system to be installed at Carrasco Airport is one of the most advanced in the world, enabling safe and efficient landings in adverse weather conditions.
Benefits of Installing ILS CAT IIIb

- – It will reduce delays, diversions, reschedulings, and cancellations due to adverse weather and fog.
- – It will offer passengers a better travel experience.
- – It will provide airlines with greater accuracy, safety, and efficiency, improving predictability at Carrasco Airport.
- – It will offer a competitive advantage for aviation development and national connectivity.
- – It will raise Carrasco Airport to the level of the best airports in the region and the world.
What Does the Project Involve?

The project includes the installation of various state-of-the-art equipment, such as a new radio navigation system, an advanced weather station with strategically distributed sensors along the main runway, and a new LED lighting system with 2,000 new lights.

Project Timeline

The works schedule was designed to minimize operational impact and was timely shared with the aviation ecosystem. Construction began in January 2025 and is progressing as planned.
The first stage on the secondary runway (01-19) and taxiways has been completed. Work on the main runway (07-25) will take place between June and November, during which time this runway will be closed, and the secondary runway (01-19) will be available for operations.
The work plan includes construction at the intersection of both runways, requiring three scheduled aerodrome closures in August and September. Closure dates and local times are:
- • From 9:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 12 to 9:00 a.m. Thursday, August 14
- • From 9:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 19 to 9:00 a.m. Thursday, August 21
- • From 9:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 2 to 9:00 a.m. Thursday, September 4
Airlines were notified in advance and are handling affected flights directly. If your flight is scheduled during one of the closure periods, your airline will contact you for rescheduling, or you may contact them directly to adjust your itinerary.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which runway will be used while the main runway is closed?
Runway 01-19 will be used. It has been recently upgraded with a new generation LED lighting system and will support Carrasco Airport’s regular commercial flight schedule, as well as private and cargo aviation.
Why is a new ILS needed?
Carrasco Airport currently has a Category I ILS. The new precision landing system being installed is among the most advanced in the world and will upgrade the airport’s capabilities, enabling safe and efficient landings in adverse weather.
This will give airlines greater predictability and operability, provide passengers with a smoother experience with fewer last-minute changes due to weather, and support the long-term development of the aviation industry and Uruguay’s global connectivity.
Why does the runway need to be closed during construction?
Installing an ILS is a large-scale project that involves integrating new technological equipment, such as
Over 2,000 new lights need to be embedded into the pavement, making the runway unusable during the installation.
Carrasco Airport operates a cross-runway system, so when works are required at their intersection, both must be closed.
Are airlines aware of the closure dates?
Airport authorities and airlines were informed of the work schedule in a timely manner to allow proper planning and service adaptation to the available infrastructure.
What should I do if my flight is scheduled during a closure date?
Airport authorities and airlines were informed of the work schedule in a timely manner to allow proper planning and service adaptation to the available infrastructure. In specific cases of passengers whose flights may coincide with one of the closure dates, airlines are contacting them directly to reschedule. Passengers are also advised to contact their airline directly to reschedule.
Carrasco Airport has set up dedicated communication channels for ILS-related queries: +598 98 050 541 and ilscarrasco@aeropuertosuruguay.com.uy. Our team is available for any questions or concerns.
Who should I contact if I have questions about my flight?
For flight-related inquiries, passengers should contact their airline or travel agency. Below, we provide the contact details of all the airlines operating at Carrasco International Airport.
Carrasco Airport has also set up special contact channels exclusively for inquiries related to the ILS project: +598 98 050 541 and ilscarrasco@aeropuertosuruguay.com.uy. Our team is available 24/7.
Will my flight be affected if it doesn’t fall on a closure date?
For flight-related questions, passengers should contact their airline or travel agency. Nonetheless, Carrasco Airport has special channels available for inquiries: +598 98 050 541 and ilscarrasco@aeropuertosuruguay.com.uy.
